Oil paint over photography
I've never taken an art class. I'm a writer by trade, but I admire and envy visual artists. For years, I dabbled in photography. During the pandemic, I began to dabble in oil painting. One day, during some serendipitous creative play, I painted over a ruined polaroid shot I'd taken, reimagining the scene that the lens had blown out. From there, I began to paint over a series of self portraits and photographs I’d captured over the years. There’s a little bit of “paint by numbers” and a little bit of “pentimento” in the process. I transform one artistic medium into another, reinterpreting my original work and understanding the content differently as I do so.
