After graduating with a BA in Creative Writing and a minor in Film & Visual Culture from the University of California at Riverside, I earned my MFA in Creative Writing with a concentration in non-fiction from The New School in New York. I had a brain tumor real quick (wild story), then started a PhD program in Writing and English at the University of Wales where I spent six months living in the tiny coastal town of Aberystwyth before deciding to change course. I had never been to Wales before.

In my early days, I worked as a test prep tutor, film studio assistant, hostess at a fancy french restaurant and egg-slinger at a greasy spoon. For a hot second, I thought about becoming a ballroom dance instructor.

My number one hobby is collecting new hobbies. I tore all the grass out of my yard and grew a food forest in its place. I ferment things and then eat them for fun. I love to travel, and my current fixation is on “walking” trips: the Camino de Santiago, the Tour du Mont Blanc, the Incan Trail to Machu Picchu, Kumano Kodo. I’ve visited 47 states, 15 countries and 13 national parks. I dabble in photography and oil painting, journal daily, read avidly, prefer fancy coffees, speak mediocre Spanish and even worse French. I live with my partner, two orange cats and our farm dog.
